Legend is used far too often in modern-day football, but it is a word that perfectly describes Bill Nicholson.
Born in 1919, Nicholson had a 36-year association with Tottenham Hotspur, and is widely considered as one of the most important figures in the club’s history.
He made more than 300 league appearances for Tottenham as a player, before managing the London club between 1958 and 1974. Whilst in charge of Spurs, he led the club to eight major trophies, including the famous double-winning 1960-61 campaign.
Nicholson passed away at the age of 85 in October 2004, but he is still held in the highest regard by those associated with Tottenham.
On Monday, Tottenham’s official Twitter account posted a tribute to the former wing-half on the anniversary of his death.
As expected, the response section was filled with tributes for Nicholson, who also represented the English national team during his days as a player.
